Brighten Your Eyes for the Holidays!
September is all about the eyes at the Lupo Center! One of the first things we notice about a person is their eyes. This prominent area on the face says a lot about someone including their age, emotion, health and lifestyle. Even though aging is an inevitable process, we never want our eyes to say we are older than we truly are.
There are several factors that cause the skin around the eyes to age, which diminishes a person’s youthful, fresh appearance. Age-related changes to the eye area include wrinkles, dark circles, drooping brown lines or eyelids and thinning lashes. Below, we will discuss these common skin conditions and ways that we can help rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes. Depending on your age, lifestyle or budget, we will customize a treatment plan just for you. As always, our goal is to soften and improve the signs of aging while still maintaining a natural age-appropriate appearance.
Soften Fine Lines and Wrinkles
Fine lines and wrinkles form as collagen naturally breaks down causing loss of facial volume, elasticity and strength. As a result, wrinkles develop because this area is very sensitive to stress caused by facial expressions such as laughing and squinting. Thanks to the latest developments in dermatological technology, we now have several options for softening unwanted lines and wrinkles:
- Neuromodulators: Botox, Dysport and Xeomin
- Fillers – Juvederm, Restylane and Belotero
- Laser Resurfacing: Fraxel Dual, Fractional CO2 Resurfacing and Clear + Brilliant
- Skin Tightening: Exilis
Improve Dark Circles Under the Eyes
Dark circles and bags under the eyes are a common problem for many people caused by genetics, unhealthy diet, allergies and lack of sleep and exercise. They begin to appear as the delicate skin around the eyes becomes thinner and fat begins to diminish causing the skin to become more translucent to blood vessels below the surface. Fortunately, there are several non-surgical treatments now available to help improve or eliminate the condition:
- Skin Care Program: eye cream (Lumiere and Teamine) and retinols
- Fillers: Juvederm, Restylane and Belotero
- Laser Resurfacing: Fraxel Dual, Fractional CO2 Resurfacing and Clear + Brilliant
Treat Brow Heaviness and Shape
Drooping brown lines or eyelids can be caused by several factors including lifestyle, genetics, injury or muscle/nerve disorder, but age also a common cause of droopiness. Brows or eyelids that begin to sag because of age are caused by collagen naturally breaking down losing elasticity and firmness and not being able to support the skin. Because the appearance of the eye area is often our first impression of someone, we understand the importance of the shape and position of the brow line and eyelids and use the following treatments to enhance the eyes:
- Neuromodulators: Botox, Dysport and Xeomin
- Fillers: Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane, Belotero and Sculptra
- Skin Tightening: Exilis
Improve Eyelash Thinning
Thinning lashes can also be caused by the same factors as mentioned above. However, just as your regular hair follicles begin to die with age, so do your eyelash follicles causing the growth of some lashes to slow down or stop. Since 2008, patients have seen significant growth and thickening of their eye lashes with a treatment of Latisse in as little as 8 to 12 weeks.
Dr. Lupo Served on the Advisory Board for Newly Approved Rosacea Product
The FDA recently approved Mirvaso (brimonidine, Galderma) gel, 0.33% for the topical treatment of the facial erythema of rosacea in adults 18 years of age or older. The once-daily medication works quickly to reduce the redness of rosacea and lasts up to 12 hours. The approval was based on the results of two Phase III studies showing that adults who used Mirvaso demonstrated significantly greater improvement in the facial redness of rosacea than vehicle gel. Galderma says it expects Mirvaso to be available in pharmacies in September 2013.
Lupo Center Contributes to Prevention Magazine’s 2013 Beauty Awards
In the August issue of Prevention magazine, Dr. Lupo and other top dermatologists from around the country asked their patients to test different beauty products. Our office tested several night creams and after reviewing each tester’s before and after pictures and feedback, Dr. Lupo chose StriVectin-AR Advanced Retinol Night Treatment as the “Best Night Cream” from the products that were provided by Prevention. Check out all of the top products on Prevention’s website.
Prevention magazine also asked Dr. Lupo to submit her favorite skincare products. Click here to see what Dr. Lupo and other top dermatologists keep in their medicine cabinets.
Restylane Can Help Reverse the Signs of Aging Skin
It’s very likely that most people have heard of the term “hyaluronic acid” even if they aren’t fully aware of what it is or how it relates to their skin. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar found in the skin and joints that is responsible for skin turgor (tone and “spring”). In the aging process, hyaluronic acid decreases because of lifestyle and sun exposure, causing the skin to sink in and form lines, folds and shadows. These changes sometimes cause the skin to age quicker than the person. Luckily, there are several FDA approved fillers that can help reverse these signs of aging!
Restylane and Perlane are two of the FDA approved hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers that are available at the Lupo Center for the treatment of facial lines and folds. Restylane was the first HA filler to be approved in the United States in 2003, and Perlane, a larger particle HA filler, was later approved in 2007. Both Restylane and Perlane can be used to re-volumize the nasolabial folds, cheeks, lips and temples. Restylane can also be used to fill in under-eye hallowing and fine lipstick lines around the mouth when injected with a small needle.
To achieve overall facial rejuvenation without cutting or downtime, it’s best to combine fillers with neuromodulators such as Botox or Dysport or resurfacing lasers such as Fraxel, Clear + Brilliant or Intense Pulse Light. Both Restylane and Perlane are versatile and results in a very natural correction. They can be dissolved if any lumping or an adverse event occurs, making it a very safe and popular alternative for non-surgical rejuvenation. The Lupo Center offers patients the option of Restylane L and Perlane L, which contain lidocaine to decrease any pain during the treatment.
Dr. Lupo trains other physicians on the use of these products at national meetings such as for the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery and the Cosmetic Bootcamp. She has also taught Tulane residents filler techniques since 1984.
During the month of August, if you purchase or pre-purchase a treatment of a Valeant filler – Restylane, Perlane or Sculptra – you will be entered into a drawing for a complimentary treatment of Dysport for yourself and a friend*!
*Each person will receive a complimentary Dysport treatment for two areas (maximum of 120 units). “Friends” must be new patients to the Lupo Center or have never received Dysport, Botox or Xeomin at the Lupo Center. Contact our office for more details.
