Preparing for laser hair removal treatment in Louisiana

Laser Hair Removal in Louisiana
Laser hair removal is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments offered at Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology in New Orleans, Louisiana. Unlike shaving, plucking, or waxing, the hair won’t grow right back. In fact, most patients maintain silky smooth skin with no more than an annual touchup. If you would like to enjoy the benefits of being hair-free and care-free, how should you prepare?

Educate yourself

Laser hair removal is a wonderful treatment, but it is not an instant solution. Laser energy affects active follicles, but a certain percentage are inactive at any given time. A series of carefully planned sessions will be needed, with the entire process taking several months. It is important to have realistic expectations and knowledge of the procedure. If you have questions, please ask.

Choose the right provider

The safety of laser treatment depends on the quality of the technology and skill of the technician. We work with state-of-the-art-lasers, and adhere to the highest standards of safety and quality for all skin types. You can feel confident trusting the expertise and experience of Dr. Lupo.

Prepare your skin

You can take a few simple steps in the weeks leading up to your appointment that will help ensure an efficient and comfortable treatment.

Avoid sun exposure for at least six weeks, because tanning adds pigment to the skin. Preferably, wear protective clothing such as long pants if you plan to have your legs treated. If the area must be exposed, use generous amounts of high SPF sunscreen. If you currently pluck or wax the area, you will need to stop about six weeks before laser treatment begins. These methods pull out the root, which is what laser energy targets.

Discovering your best skin with the help of your dermatologist in New Orleans, LA

Best Dermatologist New Orleans La

The cosmetic benefits of dermatology are well known, but many people underestimate the medical benefits. Here are the five best reasons to see your dermatologist in New Orleans (even if you don’t have wrinkles)

  • Skin cancer screening –Self-checks at home and annual screening by your dermatologist takes very little time from your busy schedule. Just a few minutes can save your life, because the success rate of melanoma treatment largely depends on how early it is diagnosed and treated.
  • Diagnostics – What is that bump? What caused that rash? The answers to questions such as these can be very important. Not only is skin the largest organ in the human body, but it is also one of our primary defenses against toxins. Skin problems are often signs of disease, allergies, or other conditions. Many medical problems are first seen with changes on the skin.
  • Controlling skin disease – Acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and other skin conditions can take a toll on your quality of life. Symptoms such as pain, itching, discomfort, and embarrassment can even interfere with routine activities. However, you don’t have to “just live with it.” With today’s wide range of treatment options, virtually any imaginable condition is treatable.
  • Customized skincare advice – From drugstores to specialty boutiques, you are literally faced with walls of skin treatments and products. Some contain allergens, impurities, or ingredients that can aggravate certain skin conditions. Some are inappropriate for your skin type, too harsh, or simply ineffective. Yes, there are a few gems, but finding them can be nearly impossible without the guidance of a knowledgeable professional.
  • Beyond the skin – One of the most common misconceptions about dermatologists is that they are exclusively skin doctors. The specialty also includes diagnostics and treatment of conditions affecting the hair and nails. From head to toenails, your dermatologist can help you stay healthy.

Five reasons New Orleans loves laser hair removal

Hair. It is one of the great frustrations of life. While we worry that it will stop growing on our scalps, we spend endless hours trying to stop it in other areas. Unfortunately, do-it-yourself solutions for unwanted body hair are temporary. It will come back no matter how many times you shave it, wax it, tweeze it, or dissolve it with depilatory creams. No wonder so many people are turning to the one simple and effective long-term solution – zap it with laser hair removal.

The benefits of laser treatment for unwanted body hair include:

  1. Permanent hair reduction – Laser energy acts on follicles, inhibiting their ability to grow new hairs. Each session reduces the number of hairs in the treatment area. After a full series of laser sessions, virtually all hair growth is stopped. For most patients, an occasional touch-up is sufficient to keep the area smooth and hairless.
  2. Convenience – Forget cumbersome daily, weekly, or monthly hair removal routines. After your initial series of appointments, laser hair removal is virtually maintenance-free.
  3. No more stubble – Every temporary technique has that awkward in-between phase. You shaved this morning, but your skin no longer feels smooth. Or hair is growing back after waxing, but it’s not long enough to wax again. Since there is no re-growth after laser removal, there is no unsightly and uncomfortable stubble.
  4. Healthy skin – Laser hair removal is generally considered a purely cosmetic treatment. However, it can greatly benefit people with certain skin problems. Individuals prone to ingrown hairs or razor bumps often choose laser removal to avoid shaving. For people with extremely sensitive skin or conditions such as psoriasis or eczema, abrasion and minor skin injuries caused by pulling hairs or shaving can cause itching, inflammation, or trigger outbreaks. Laser treatment is a great way to avoid these problems.
  5. Cost effective – The upfront price of laser treatment may be higher than alternatives. However, if you add up the money spent on razors, waxing, or creams over time, you may realize that laser removal is more economical than you thought.

New Orleans millennials are wondering, is it too soon for Botox®?

Botox® is one of the most requested cosmetic procedures, and it keeps getting more popular. When its wrinkle-reducing properties were first discovered, it became an instant favorite of aging women. As the stigma surrounding male cosmetic enhancement crumbled, Botox® gained a new following. The procedure is now so popular among men that it has been dubbed “Brotox.” The latest group to take an interest this treatment is young adults. A growing number of women and men in their thirties, and even in their twenties, are looking for ways to stop early signs of aging before it even starts.

When is the best time to begin Botox®?

There is no universal answer to that question. According to the FDA, Botox® Cosmetic is not recommended for patients under the age of 18. Aside from that, there are no hard-and-fast guidelines. The best time to start Botox® is when you need it, which can vary greatly from one patient to another.

Every person is unique, and we all age differently. For example, if your free time during high school and college was largely spent outdoors without sun protection, you may start seeing fine lines in your early to mid-twenties. UV exposure hastens the aging of skin and people who don’t wear sunglasses tend to squint a lot, which can lead to muscle rigidity and resulting lines in the skin. Alternately, if you protect yourself from the sun and take good care of your skin, you can slow the aging process.

Prevention vs. correction

You can wait for aging to happen, and then take steps to reverse it. However, a much more effective strategy is to stop it early. In either case, Botox® can be a great benefit. In fact, research suggests that it is most effective when treatment begins early. When facial lines first appear, they are dynamic wrinkles, meaning that they show up when you form an expression, and fade when you relax your face. Botox® treatments begun at this stage can keep those muscles relaxed and supple, preventing deeply etched lines from forming. Although nothing can stop the aging process, a practical approach can greatly slow it, which delays the need for more invasive procedures.
