Why Radiofrequency is Best for Fat Melting

Dr Mary Lupo says Radiofrequency is Best for Fat Melting

Here at the Lupo Center, when patients are looking to reduce their body fat, we turn to BTL Aesthetics’s radiofrequency devices Vanquish and Exilis. The Vanquish device is large enough to treat the abdomen or thighs with one pass, while the Exilis device has a smaller handpiece to treat areas like the upper arms.

Many patients ask why we chose Vanquish and Exilis’s radiofrequency method (heat to destroy fat) instead of a Cryolipolyis device (cold to freeze fat) or a Diode Laser (ultrasound to dissolves fat over time).  Below are some fat facts from BTL to show why radiofrequency is the best way to trim fat both physically and economically.

PROVEN FAT FACTS:

BTL Vanquish Cryolipolysis Diode Laser
Spot Size [cm2] 2100 268 140

Facts and myths about laser hair removal in New Orleans

You may have heard laser hair removal is painful, or that it’s painless. You’ve probably seen it described as permanent, or not permanent. It works miracles, or it doesn’t work. These are a few examples of the misinformation and conflicting information that New Orleans patients are exposed to. What is the truth?

Safety

Claims that laser hair removal is unsafe for dark or sensitive skin originate from outdated information, or refer to outdated devices. Modern laser technology can be used safely on any skin type or skin tone. However, it is a precision treatment requiring good judgement. Like any laser, the device can cause burns if used improperly, so the safety is largely dependent on the quality of the provider.

Permanency

Laser energy only works on hair follicles in the active growth phase. At any given time, a certain percentage of follicles are in the resting phase. With multiple treatments at optimal time intervals, we can treat nearly all follicles, but it is technically impossible to eliminate 100 percent of follicles.

Think of it as a math equation. If you remove half, and then remove half of what is left, and keep repeating, you will eventually have almost nothing, but never reach zero. In legal terms, the result is usually described by the FDA as permanent reduction rather that permanent removal. In practical terms, it means that most patients can remain hair-free with a touch-up once a year at most.

Effectiveness

Coarse, dark colored hairs readily absorb energy, and usually respond quickly to laser treatment. Light colored, fine hairs may be less responsive. Laser hair removal can still be effective unless the hairs are completely devoid of pigment. However, more treatment sessions are needed to achieve desired results. Your dermatologist will explain the expected results and number of treatments during your consultation.

One of the greatest benefits of dermal fillers such as Juvéderm is convenience. You can visit your New Orleans dermatologist for a short, comfortable treatment and go on about your day. There is no extensive pre- or post-treatment regimen, but there are several things you can do to ensure you enjoy the maximum benefits and minimum side effects.

Before treatment

  • Avoid optional blood thinning medications for about two weeks prior to surgery. Many common pain relievers, herbal dietary supplements, and some other over the counter products have blood-thinning properties, which makes you more susceptible to bruising.
  • You should not discontinue or pause any prescription medication without consulting with the physician who prescribed it. However, it is important to tell your dermatologist about any prescriptions, especially blood thinners.
  • Follow any specific pre-treatment recommendations that your dermatologist gives.

Post-treatment

  • Watch for any unusual side effects. Your dermatologist will discuss what to expect, and explain common side effects (if any) depending on the specific product or procedure used. If you notice anything that seems abnormal, call our office.
  • Don’t attempt to manipulate the filler. Mild swelling is normal after an injection. It will resolve quickly, but in the meantime, the area may appear over-filled. Do not attempt to use pressure to flatten it or massage the area without consulting your dermatologist. This can aggravate swelling, and may displace the filler resulting in a less desirable appearance once the swelling recedes.
  • Always contact the office if increasing pain occurs.
  • Follow any specific post-treatment instructions given by your dermatologist.

Be sure to schedule touch-up visits to maintain the results of treatment. The frequency of touch-ups will vary. Juvéderm generally lasts about six months for most patients. However, the timeline will vary depending on which Juvéderm product is used, what area is treated, and other factors. We will discuss maintenance treatments during your consultation.

Are chemical peels safe in the New Orleans sweltering summer heat?

Chemical peels are highly customizable and extremely effective for a variety of applications. From overall skin rejuvenation to targeted acne treatment, a peel can be a great solution. However, you may have heard that the procedure is best in the cool winter months. Do you really need to wait until the temperatures in New Orleans start dropping?

Any time is a great time for a chemical peel – with the right provider

The short answer is that chemical peeling can be a very safe procedure any time of year, in any weather. You will need to take some precautions, but you should be advised of these prior to treatment. The most important factor in both safety and efficacy is the quality of treatment and guidance you receive from your provider. The fact is, some people prefer summer treatments because they are teachers or because they can hide their peeling skin while on vacation.

Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology adheres to the highest standards of safety and clinical excellence. This includes attention to detail and sound judgement in planing and administering the procedure, such as choosing the appropriate formula and neutralizing it at precisely the tight moment. It also includes patient education, giving comprehensive pre- and post-procedure instructions, as well as being available to answer any questions or concerns that arise.

About weather and chemical peeling

If you are given proper aftercare guidelines, and you follow them, you needn’t worry about the time of year. There are some seasonal considerations when planning a chemical peel, which will be discussed during your consultation. These include:

  • Your skin will be highly sensitive to UV rays during healing. Summer sun is especially intense, but you can effectively protect the area with sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and staying indoors.
  • Having a peel in winter does not mean you can skip the sun protection. Even on the coolest and cloudiest day there are UV rays if there is daylight.

Four things New Orleans area patients should know about Juvéderm and other fillers

If you’ve researched New Orleans antiaging treatments or read a beauty magazine in the last decade, you probably know about dermal fillers. Juvéderm and similar products can be injected into the face to replace lost volume and literally “fill in” wrinkles. What else is there to know? Actually, quite a lot!

Fillers aren’t just for wrinkles

Dermal fillers can also:

  • Improve the appearance of depressed acne scars
  • Add fullness to thin or sunken cheeks
  • Correct asymmetry or unsightly shape of the nose
  • Shape thin lips
  • Fill sunken temples
  • Define the jaw line

Fillers aren’t just for your face

Your hands are one of the first areas to show signs of age. As the skin becomes thinner, veins become visible and hands acquire a boney appearance. Dermal fillers are fantastic for non-surgical hand rejuvenation. In fact, Radiesse is specifically FDA approved for hands.

The difference is more than a brand name

There are many dermal fillers on the market. You might think they are essentially different brands of the same thing. That’s not the case. Juvéderm is formulated with hyaluronic acid, a

substance naturally present in skin, so there is minimal risk of having an adverse reaction. It stands apart from other hyaluronic acid products due to a high degree of cross-linking, which gives it a smooth texture and resiliency.

Does this mean Juvéderm is better? Sometimes it is. Sometimes Restylane is better, or Sculptra, or… Every filler has distinctive qualities. There is no single “best” brand that will give great results in all applications. Instead, the best results are achieved by matching the unique needs of the patient, and of the treatment area, with the most appropriate product. These products all perform best in the hands of an experienced board certified dermatologist with an artistic eye.

 Fillers can’t do it all

Not all wrinkles are caused by volume loss. Therefore, not all wrinkles can be filled. Products such as Juvéderm are often combined with Botox® or other treatments for comprehensive anti-aging.
