Men Turn to Lunch-Time Cosmetic Treatments for A Refreshed Look

1Walk into a gym on any day, and you’ll see men working out. Why? Because they care about the way they look! While exercise is excellent for both physical and emotional health, it may not be enough to provide complete rejuvenation that some men are looking for. We want to share some ways that we can help men achieve a younger, more refreshed looked while giving them an extra shot of self-confidence.

We know most men lead busy lives and don’t want to look “done,” so we want to make things as easy as possible:

  1. Quick procedures that can be done before work or during lunch
  2. Non-surgical, no-downtime procedures
  3. Gradual results with little to no pain

Here are the most common conditions men want to fix:

Love handles and belly Fat

The Solution: To help eliminate unwanted fat and contour the body, we offer Exilis, Vanquish, VASER Shape or SmoothShapes. All six devices give patients different options for a fast and effective way to improve those hard-to-fix areas when diet and exercise alone are not working.

Treatment Time: 30-45 minutes

Broken capillaries, redness and spots

2

The Solution: Both Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Excel V are used to address several skin conditions including rosacea, acne, pigmentation disorders and sun damaged skin. They are used to improve the skin’s redness, texture and tone.

Treatment Time: 30 minutes

The Solution: Clear+Brilliant and Permea are gentle, yet effective treatments to give skin a youthful glow. Clear+Brilliant can help improve tone and texture while reducing fine lines and pore size, while Permea is an option for improving pigmentation seen in melasma and other skin pigmentation disorders.

Treatment Time: 30 minutes

Excessive hair growth/ingrown hair

3

The Solution: Used on the face, underarms, bikini, legs, arms, back, buttocks, abdomen and chest, laser hair removal is the most popular laser treatment in the United States. While it eliminates the need to shave, pluck or wax, it also helps to prevent ingrown hairs.

Treatment Time: 15-45

Sweaty underarms

The Solution: Botox temporarily blocks the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands don’t receive chemical signals, severe underarm sweating is reduced in that area.

Treatment Time: 15 minutes

Sagging skin, turkey neck or double chin

blog-8-28-2015-exilis
The Solution: For skin tightening, we offer Exilis Elite and Ultherapy to tighten, tone and lift loose skin on most parts of the body including the jowls, neck, eyebrows, abdomen, arms and legs.

Treatment Time: 30-60 minutes

The Solution: Kybella is a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into subcutaneous fat (double chin), Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells, followed by a natural healing and elimination process to improve the chin profile. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.

Treatment Time: 15 minutes

Under-eye hollows

The Solution: Fillers can be used when the under eyes become hallow causing a tired, droopy look. The filler plumps up the skin to thicken it and reduces shadows to give a refreshed look to the eye area.

Treatment Time: 10 minutes

Facial wrinkles

Cosmetic TreatmentsThe The Solution: Injectables along can treat one problematic area, but when combined, they work together for complete facial rejuvenation that leaves patients looking younger and refreshed. Neuromodulators, such as Botox, Dysport or Xeomin, reduce muscle movement, which decreases lines on the face. Fillers, such as Radiesse, Juvederm, Juvederm Voluma, Restylane, and Sculptra, are used to fill and lift the skin where wrinkles and folds are prominent.

Treatment Time: 10-20 minutes

Veiny or mottled hands

The Solution: Hands, just as much as the face, show signs of aging when volume is loss. Radiesse is the superior filler to plump up the back of aging hands, so that veins and tendons are less noticeable.

Treatment Time: 15 minutes

What are the different types of skin cancers and the best treatment options for care?

Skin cancer is a serious issue, and can occur anywhere on the body. However, it is most commonly noticed on areas of the skin that have been previously exposed to the sun, such as the face, the neck, the chest, the arms, and the hands.

Skin cancer can develop into one of three types, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, or squamous cell carcinoma. All three of these types of skin cancers can be diagnosed, treated, and prevented with the help of Dr. Mary Lupo at the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology.

A skin cancer diagnosis is the first step needed before treatment is planned. The type of skin cancer can be identified with a biopsy. A biopsy allows a portion of the problem area to be sent to a laboratory for testing to see if there are cancerous skin cells in the sample. If so, it is reported to the dermatologist and the dermatologist will notify the patient of the results.

Once a diagnosis has been made, patients must act quickly to avoid the spread of cancer if it is a melanoma. There may be further tests done to make sure it is not metastasizing. A patient’s prognosis will be greatly determined by many factors including the stage, type, and size of the cancer, as well as where it is on the body. Patients in good health may also have a better chance at fighting skin cancer than those who have weak immune systems or are dealing with other medical issues.

After diagnosis, the treatment is planned.  For easy basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, simple excision or topical chemotherapy are options. More severe or recurrent basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, especially those on the face, require mohs surgery.  Finally, melanoma needs an oncological or plastic surgeon to excise with wide margins and do possible lymph node dissection.

What are the best treatment options for acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that is often associated with teenagers, but many adults deal with different types of acne as well. Acne can negatively affect the appearance, texture, and health of the skin and it can be embarrassing for those who deal with it. Some acne is severe enough that patients are unable to disguise their problem with cosmetics. Those who want to put their best face forward in social situations often take the time to speak to a dermatologist at the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology about the best treatment options for acne.

Acne can be addressed in a variety of ways, but this needs to be determined based on the type of acne patients are experiencing. There are many different varieties and a diagnosis can help guide Dr. Mary Lupo and her team in developing a skin care routine and treatment options that work best. The two types are inflammatory (includes papules, pustules, nodules and cysts) and non-inflammatory (comedones and milia). They can range from mild to severe with an evaluation from a dermatologist.

Once the type of acne has been determined, treatment options will be discussed. Some patients do well with the use of over-the-counter products. However, by the time they are visiting a dermatologist, many have attempted to treat the problem in this manner without any noticeable results or changes. This is when they decide to see Dr. Mary Lupo and seek additional assistance.

Treatment options for acne may include:

  • Topical creams and gels
  • Oral antibiotics
  • Hormonal therapies
  • Laser  and light therapies
  • Chemical therapies
  • Accutane

Patients in and around the area of New Orleans are often interested in speaking with Dr. Mary Lupo regarding the ways in which they can treat their acne in a safe and manageable way. If you live in the community or surrounding areas and want to seek the assistance of a quality dermatological provider such as Dr. Mary Lupo, now is the best time to contact the team of the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology. We can schedule new patients into our practice for a general consultation and initial evaluation to determine how patients can improve their skin and medical conditions with our professional guidance.

What are the anti-aging benefits of Fraxel Dual treatment?

The signs of aging often creep up on patients and they are unhappy with the way it affects their appearance. Fine lines and wrinkles are never welcome on men or women. Skin laxity is a cause, resulting from the loss of collagen and elastin in the skin. The skin becomes loose and wrinkles and folds begin to form on the face, around the eyes, on the forehead, around the nose and mouth, and even along the jowls. Dr. Mary Lupo is a board certified dermatologist at the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology in the New Orleans area who may speak to patients about the anti-aging benefits of Fraxel Dual.

Fraxel Dual is a procedure that is done for patients with an interest in rejuvenating their skin. It can also help with a range of medical problems such as acne scarring, stretch marks and surgical scars. It can be performed on nearly any part of the body including the stomach, face, neck, chest, hands, and arms.

Fraxel Dual is a special laser treatment that can provide amazing improvements. It can uncover the healthy, youthful skin patients once had and improve conditions that may have been troublesome over time. It is non-invasive and less costly than alternative services available, and patients will experience minimal healing time, with most patients returning the work and social activities the following day.

Dr. Mary Lupo and her team at the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology encourage new patients in and around the area of New Orleans to consider Fraxel Dual for its anti-aging benefits. It can improve:

Dr. Mary Lupo discusses the long-term effects of excessive sun exposure in Summer

Dr. Mary Lupo and the team of the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology are committed to helping patients in and around the area take good care of their skin every day. A big problem that can lead to skin cancer is sun exposure so it is best that patients are serious about protecting their skin as necessary during the harsh, summer months in the New Orleans area.

Many patients are not aware of the long-term effects of sun exposure during the hot summer months. In the summer, the sun is at its strongest, especially during the middle part of the day. Dr. Mary Lupo takes the time to educate her patients on skin protection for many reasons. Some common effects of sun exposure include:

Sunburn

The first noticeable problem with sun exposure is sunburn. Sunburn can be extremely uncomfortable and can damage the skin in ways that may not be noticeable initially. This also increases the risk for skin cancer when sunburn occurs, no matter what the age.

Freckles

Freckles tend to pop out when patients receive extensive sun exposure. While they are not problematic, some patients do not enjoy their appearance and the way they can affect the tone of the skin. Freckles can be difficult to disguise with cosmetics.

Accelerated skin aging

No one wants to see the signs of aging occur on the skin, but sun exposure on a regular basis can actually accelerate the development of fine lines, wrinkles and sagging. Avoid the appearance of aging skin by reducing sun exposure in the summer months.

Pigmentation issues

Sun spots are common pigmentation complaints by patients who visit a dermatologist. These can develop with even minimal sun exposure.

Changes in skin cells

The most serious long-term danger of excessive sun exposure during the summer is skin cancer. Skin cancer is a serious issue and it should not be taken lightly. Patients are urged to use broad-spectrum sunscreen every day and to ensure they use the proper amount when participating in outdoor activities that can result in UV ray exposure. Reapplication is a necessity.

While there are benefits to sunlight, such as natural Vitamin D, it is important to take note in regards to ways to protect the skin with sunscreen and to avoid sun exposure in mid-day when it’s at its strongest. Remember tanning beds do not provide the UVB that makes Vitamin D. Tanning beds are intense sources of UVA, the more deeply penetrating UV energy that accelerates wrinkles, sagging and suppresses your immune system causing fever blisters in herpes-prone individuals. Dr. Mary Lupo can educate patients on skin care during the summer months.

Bye, Bye Double Chin

According to a 2014 survey by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, approximately seven out of 10 consumers are bothered by submental fullness (also known as a double chin). Submental fullness is a common yet undertreated condition that can detract from an otherwise balanced and harmonious facial appearance – leading to an older and heavier look. Submental fullness can affect both women and men of all ages and weight, and it is often resistant to diet and exercise and can be influenced by multiple factors including aging and genetics.

The FDA recently approved the first and only non-surgical treatment for reduction of submental fullness called Kybella (formerly known as ATX-101). It has been under development for more than nine years, and it is the subject of over 20 clinical studies involving more than 2,600 patients. Dr. Lupo was one of the investigators during the clinical trial, and she has been named a trainer for Kythera, the makers of Kybella.

Kybella is a non-human and non-animal patented formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into subcutaneous fat, Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells, followed by a natural healing and elimination process to improve the chin profile. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. Patients who want to dramatically improve their jawline with non-surgical options can be treated with Kybella in conjunction with dermal fillers and/or radio-frequency and ultrasound devices for additional definition and skin tightening.

Kybella is administered by injections into the fat under the chin through a series of treatments spaced no less than one month apart. Many patients experienced visible results in two to four treatments, and up to six treatments may be administered depending on the desired outcome of the patient and treating physician. Once the aesthetic response is achieved, retreatment is not expected.

The Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology will begin treating patients with Kybella in late June.  If you are interested in learning more about this treatment or to see if you are a candidate, please contact our office to schedule a consultation.
