Laser Treatment For Men And Women Eliminates Unwanted Hair

Shaving, bleaching, plucking, waxing, or trimming unwanted or excessive hair on your face or body may grow tiresome over time and may irritate your skin. That’s why we have been offering safe and effective laser hair reduction treatment for men and women since 1999.

How laser hair removal works

One of the most popular laser treatments, hair reduction and removal allows you to put away the creams, razors, and tweezers for good. Light energy targets the pigments in each hair. As the light is absorbed, it creates heat energy, which eliminates the hair follicle and stops hair growth.

To prepare for the procedure, patients are asked to refrain from waxing or plucking hairs so that the hair is present in the follicle. Shaving immediately before the treatment maximizes the effectiveness of the laser, allowing the laser energy to penetrate into the follicle to heat and destroy it.

Who is a candidate for laser hair removal?

Laser hair reduction works best on patients who wish to remove darker hairs. Because the laser focuses on pigmentation, grey, blonde, or white hairs are not responsive to treatment. Laser hair reduction effectively removes undesired hair on the face, chin, neck, back, underarm, legs, and bikini area.

How many treatments are needed?

Treatments vary by patient, pigmentation, and thickness of hair to be removed. Hair grows in cycles so the procedure is typically scheduled to address each new growth cycle for optimal results.

Understanding Skin Pigmentation Problems And Causes

You are uniquely you. Just as no two people will have identical thoughts, beliefs, body shapes, or hair texture, your skin tone and pigmentation are unlike any other individual.

Understanding pigmentation

Pigmentation is the color and tone of your skin. Certain cells, named melanocytes, exist in the surface layer of the skin and produce the pigment, melanin. The level of melanin that is produced determines the color of your skin. If these cells create too much or too little melanin, skin pigmentation problems occur.

Types of pigmentation disorders

Skin disorders or problems with discoloration may affect small patches or your entire body. If your cells produce too much melanin, skin will darken. Overexposure to the sun, Addison’s disease, and hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause your skin to become darker.

If your melanin production is decreased, skin will turn lighter. Vitiligo is a skin problem that occurs when the melanocytes are destroyed, and it results in patches of white skin. Albinism is a genetic condition in which production of melanin is restricted, resulting in no pigmentation in skin, eyes, or hair.

Other factors that can affect pigmentation include the abnormal development or clustering of blood vessels, such as hemangioma and nevus flammeus, also called port wine stains. Moles, scars, burns, infections, certain health conditions, and blisters can also contribute to discoloration.

If you would like to know more about pigmentation problems and gain a better understanding about how to care for your skin, call us today for your comprehensive consultation.

Restylane Can Help Reverse the Signs of Aging Skin

Restylane New Orleans LA - Dr Mary Lupo

Restylane New Orleans LA - Dr Mary Lupo

It’s very likely that most people have heard of the term “hyaluronic acid” even if they aren’t fully aware of what it is or how it relates to their skin.  Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar found in the skin and joints that is responsible for skin turgor (tone and “spring”).  In the aging process, hyaluronic acid decreases because of lifestyle and sun exposure, causing the skin to sink in and form lines, folds and shadows.  These changes sometimes cause the skin to age quicker than the person.  Luckily, there are several FDA approved fillers that can help reverse these signs of aging!

Restylane and Perlane are two of the FDA approved hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers that are available at the Lupo Center for the treatment of facial lines and folds. Restylane was the first HA filler to be approved in the United States in 2003, and Perlane, a larger particle HA filler, was later approved in 2007. Both Restylane and Perlane can be used to re-volumize the nasolabial folds, cheeks, lips and temples.  Restylane can also be used to fill in under-eye hallowing and fine lipstick lines around the mouth when injected with a small needle.

To achieve overall facial rejuvenation without cutting or downtime, it’s best to combine fillers with neuromodulators such as Botox or Dysport or resurfacing lasers such as Fraxel, Clear + Brilliant or Intense Pulse Light. Both Restylane and Perlane are versatile and results in a very natural correction. They can be dissolved if any lumping or an adverse event occurs, making it a very safe and popular alternative for non-surgical rejuvenation. The Lupo Center offers patients the option of Restylane L and Perlane L, which contain lidocaine to decrease any pain during the treatment.

Dr. Lupo trains other physicians on the use of these products at national meetings such as for the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery and the Cosmetic Bootcamp. She has also taught Tulane residents filler techniques since 1984.

During the month of August, if you purchase or pre-purchase a treatment of a Valeant filler – Restylane, Perlane or Sculptra – you will be entered into a drawing for a complimentary treatment of Dysport for yourself and a friend*!

*Each person will receive a complimentary Dysport treatment for two areas (maximum of 120 units).  “Friends” must be new patients to the Lupo Center or have never received Dysport, Botox or Xeomin at the Lupo Center.  Contact our office for more details.

Want a Natural, Younger Look? Juvederm Can Help!

Juvederm New Orleans LA - Dr Mary Lupo

Juvederm New Orleans LA - Dr Mary Lupo

When women and men are interested in reversing the signs of facial aging, the first word or treatment that usually comes to mind is “Botox.” While a Botox treatment is very beneficial for most patients seeking a fresh appearance, it is only half of the solution for overall facial rejuvenation. In order to achieve a natural, younger look, our doctors recommend using a filler to soften lines and wrinkles and to add volume lost through the aging process. One of the most popular fillers at the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology is Juvederm.

Juvederm is an FDA approved hyaluronic acid filler for the treatment of superficial facial lines and folds. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar-like molecules found in the skin and joints. It is responsible for skin’s tone and firmness, and it decreases with age and sun exposure, causing the skin to sink in and look older from the lines, folds and shadows. Juvederm is primary used to correct the nasolabial folds, but it can also be used to re-volumize the cheeks, temples, lips and lipstick lines around the mouth and to fill in under-eye hallowing.

Juvederm’s strength is that it is very soft and results in a very natural correction. Juvederm can be dissolved if any lumping or adverse reactions occur, making it a very safe and popular alternative for non-surgical rejuvenation. When Juvederm is combined with Botox, Dysport or lasers, the aging face can be softly and naturally reshaped without cutting or downtime. Also, layering Juvederm with Sculptra results in a softening of gaunt, tired faces.

Dr. Lupo was an investigator for the FDA study in 2004-2005 that resulted in Juvederm’s approval in the United States, and she helped introduced this filler to Australian physicians in 2007. She often trains other physicians on the use of this product at meetings for the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society for Dermatological Surgery and the Cosmetic Bootcamp. Dr. Lupo has also taught Tulane residents filler techniques since 1984.

During the month of July, any patient who purchases or pre-purchases two syringes of Juvederm can receive their choice of a FREE 3mL bottle of Latisse or 20 FREE units of Botox. Offer is valid until July 31, 2013 or while supplies last. Patients MUST present the coupon below in order to receive the free product.
