To raise awareness of melanoma and other types of skin cancer, and to encourage early detection through self-exams, the American Academy of Dermatology designates the first Monday in May as Melanoma Monday (May 5, 2014) and May as Skin Cancer Awareness Month.
Your risk of getting skin cancer is real. Current estimates are that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer. The American Academy of Dermatology provides several ways to stay skin healthy:
Prevent. Never leave home without the proper sunscreen and enhance your sun protection with a wide-brim hat, sunglasses, shade and dietary supplements.
Detect. Look for new changing, itching or bleeding spots on your skin (see chart above).

If you’re planning a spring getaway, you may be tempted to get a base tan before you leave. Tanning in a tanning bed won’t prevent sunburn. Time spent in a tanning bed will increase your risk of developing skin cancer. To keep your skin looking and feeling its best, use a daily sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and don’t forget to reapply, especially if you’re in direct sunlight!
Correct Aging Skin with the VISIA Complexion Analysis
With the VISIA Complexion Analysis, we are able to identify the skin’s characteristics on all layers: top, bottom and in between. The VISIA system’s multi-spectral imaging and analysis provides a clear, multi-dimensional portrait of the individual aspects of a person’s complexion, which contribute to overall appearance. Dr. Lupo Named “Mentor of the Year”
Dr. Mary Lupo has been named “Mentor of the Year” by the Women’s Dermatologic Society (WDS), the largest group of women dermatologists in the world. 
Dr. Lupo, who is a former president of the WDS, is being recognized for her generosity of teaching residents and fellows through the WDS mentorship program. She also mentors residents through her participation in the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Preceptor Program and the Cosmetic Bootcamp University program. In 2013, Dr. Lupo welcomed 12 students into her practice and gave them the opportunity to shadow her while treating patients. She also teaches the residents at the Tulane Residents’ Cosmetic Clinic, which she started as chief resident in 1983.
Dr. Lupo will receive the “Mentor of the Year” award at the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting in Denver on March 23, 2014.
