NEW ORLEANS LEADING DERMATOLOGIST IN AESTHETIC TRAINING, DR. MARY LUPO, VOICES CONCERN FOR PATIENTS BEING TREATED BY UNTRAINED OR UNCERTIFIED PHYSICIANS AND NON-PHYSICIANS
New Orleans, LA – May 8, 2013 – Mary P. Lupo, M.D., board certified dermatologist and clinical professor of dermatology at Tulane University School of Medicine, believes that all patients, no matter their medical condition, should be treated with the finest medical care by a board certified physician. Time and time again, Dr. Lupo and her peers in the medical field come across stories from patients as well stories on TV and in newspapers about “doctors” positioning themselves as fully qualified physicians, when in reality, they did not complete a residency in an aesthetic specialty and are practicing outside of their field of training.
Particularly in the field of dermatology, Dr. Lupo is concerned about the increasing number of patients coming to her office after suffering complications as a result of untrained or uncertified physicians and non-physicians performing medical procedures with injectables and lasers. Even more frightening is when those patients are treated with illegal products. Dr. Lupo believes all patients deserve to know the truth and qualifications of their treating physician and advises all patients do their homework before having any procedure done.
DR. LUPO’S TIPS FOR CHOOSING A PHYSICIAN FOR COSMETIC PROCEDURES
Choose the “Core Four”
- Dermatology, Plastic Surgery, Facial Plastic Surgery and Oculo-Plastic Surgery. These four medical specialties have extensive formal residency training in performing cosmetic procedures, not mere weekend courses.
Check for Board Certification
- You can verify any physician’s board certification by checking with the American Board of Medical Specialties. (www.ABMS.org).
Always Select the Medical Office Setting
- Qualified physicians are trained to handle cosmetic complications.
- Non-physicians providing cosmetic procedures in their homes such as lasers and injectables are in violation of the state laws for the practice of medicine. Report any such illegal activity to the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. (www.lsbme.org)
- Physicians must follow the rules of the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME) when delegating cosmetic procedures and be responsible for their patients.
- Discounted products may be dilute or illegally imported materials not subject to review by the FDA for purity and safety.
Dr. Lupo is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), and she has served as a board member and medical advisor for numerous national and international dermatological organizations, including president of the Women’s Dermatologic Society and past member of the ASDS board of directors. As chief resident in 1983, Dr. Lupo founded Tulane University School of Medicine’s Resident Cosmetic Clinic and has served as a faculty member since 1984. She is also a founding director of The Cosmetic Bootcamp, an innovative continuing medical education program that teaches board certified core aesthetic physicians the latest techniques for aging skin correction. Dr. Lupo is the author of more than 60 published articles and book chapters, and she has been a speaker on various dermatological topics at nearly 250 national and international meetings and seminars.

DR. MARY LUPO SERVES AS THE 2013 COSMETIC BOOTCAMP COURSE CO-DIRECTOR
New Orleans, LA – May 7, 2013 – Mary P. Lupo, M.D., board certified dermatologist and clinical professor of dermatology at Tulane University School of Medicine, is a founding co-director and this year’s course co-director of the 2013 Annual Cosmetic Bootcamp Summer Meeting “Didactic and Live Technique Symposium.” She will also serve as a faculty member at the meeting, which will be held at the St. Regis in Aspen, Colorado, on June 20-23. All physicians who are board certified in the field of dermatology, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, facial plastics or ophthalmology are invited to attend.
Cosmetic Bootcamp founding co-directors, Drs. Lupo, Kenneth Beer and Vic Narurkar work each year to put together a stellar meeting that has earned a reputation as the premier cross specialty educational and networking event. Through didactic presentations, live patient demonstrations and publications by the most reputable experts in the aesthetic field, Cosmetic Bootcamp is the leading resource for aesthetic professionals who shape their specialties through teaching, mentoring and research. The meeting also includes industry exhibits showcasing the latest technology, products and scientific advances as well as an intimate setting to interact with faculty and colleagues. The diverse offerings of activities fulfill the educational needs of physicians, residents, office staff and extenders*. Guests are also offered ample free time each day to enjoy the beautiful city of Aspen, Colorodo.
Cosmetic Bootcamp is pleased to expand this year’s program in an effort to stay up-to-date with the latest aesthetic technology and electronic communications. According to Dr. Lupo, “as the number of plastic surgeons and dermatologists attending the meetings has increased, we have added courses relevant to their practices.” Topics added include breast augmentation, optimal strategies for comprehensive aesthetic outcomes, and social media as it relates to cosmetic physicians.
“Cosmetic Bootcamp is committed to highlighting the benefits of utilizing only board certified physicians from the ‘core four’ – dermatology (with their pioneering of non-surgical injectable and laser rejuvenation), plastic surgeons (for their work in surgical aesthetic procedures), ophthalmology and otolaryngology (for their pioneering work in neuromodulation),” said Dr. Lupo. “These specialties get core training during residency to allow them to deliver the best and safest results for patients.”

Get Educated on Preventing and Detecting Skin Cancer
In an effort to raise awareness about the prevention of skin cancer, the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology is joining the American Academy of Dermatology to spread the word throughout May during Skin Cancer Awareness Month and on Monday, May 6 for Melanoma Monday®. As the days grow longer and the temperature starts to rise, we all need to be aware that extra sun exposure can be very harmful to our skin.
It is currently estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Numbers like that make a world without skin cancer seem to be an impossible goal. But it is in our reach. Skin cancer is highly treatable when caught early. The five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads to the lymph nodes is 98 percent. Yet, sadly, one American dies from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, almost every hour.
Join us on Melanoma Monday and throughout May to spread the word about skin cancer. Stop by our office to pick up sunscreen samples and educational information about preventing and detecting skin cancer as well as to schedule your annual skin screening with one of our doctors.
The Skin Cancer Foundation is devoted solely to education, prevention, early detection, and prompt treatment of the world’s most common cancer. Since May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, we want to share a few articles discussing ways to prevent and detect skin cancer:

- Hooked on Tanning: Why You Shouldn’t Start
