RADIESSE Volumizing Filler for Wrinkle Reduction and Removal
While aging is a natural process, not everyone ages in the same way or at the same time. Depending on genetics and lifestyle, some women and men may notice the signs sooner than others. At-home products such as creams, serums, moisturizers or masks may help reduce fine lines, wrinkles or brown spots, but these products can’t replenish the loss of volume in the skin. As part of the aging process, natural collagen breaks down diminishing facial volume, elasticity and strength – all of which diminishes the skin’s youthful, fresh appearance.
Ideal wrinkle reduction is achieved by replenishing your skin’s lost volume. Upon injection, RADIESSE® Volumizing Filler immediately provides the volume and lift needed to diminish the signs of aging because of the calcium-based microspheres and gel that comprise the product. But what’s unique about RADIESSE is that it acts as a scaffold under the skin, providing structure and stimulating your own natural collagen to grow. This process continues for several months, which extends the initial effect of the filler. Best of all, the natural results are clinically proven to last a year or more in many patients, which is why the Lupo Center chooses RADIESSE to achieve long-lasting facial rejuvenation.
Radiesse is a safe, next generation dermal filler that uniquely gives volume correction immediately, as well as delayed collagen stimulation for lasting results. This product is stiffer than other fillers, so Dr. Lupo finds it beneficial for men and older women because it provides more structural lift.
Radiesse is typically injected into the nasolabial folds, the marionette fold (the fold that goes from the mouth corner to the jaw), the pre-jowl sulcus (where the chin meets the lateral jaw line), and along the jaw line to provide lift and definition. Radiesse is the optimal filler for non-surgical enhancements and augmentations to a patient’s nose, cheeks or chin. It can also be used for lipoatrophy (localized loss of fat tissue), total face filling and to reduce the appearance of some scarring. It should not be injected in lips, as lumping is common in this area.
Finally, hands, just as much as the face, show signs of aging when volume is loss. Radiesse is the superior filler to plump up the backs of aging hands, so that veins and tendons are less noticeable.
Radiesse is not able to be dissolved, so it is important that the injector be experienced with this filler and understand the proper depth for injection as well proper injection technique. Dr Lupo mixes anesthetic with this filler to provide greater comfort to her patients.
The first 10 patients to schedule a treatment of Radiesse will receive complimentary Radiesse product. If interested, email abby@drmarylupo.com by March 31, 2013 to set up your appointment.

Get Picture-Perfect Skin for Your Wedding
With so many details to worry about prior to the wedding, looking your best doesn’t have to add to your list. A pre-wedding visit to the dermatologist can correct problems and make your wedding more stress-free. Prescription products and skin care programs can correct acne and blotchy skin so you can look radiant. “New procedures like Clear + Brilliant, microdermabrasion and lunch time peels can make your skin glow, while reducing pore size and skin discoloration with no down time,” says Dr. Lupo.
Injectables such as Botox and fillers can safely improve your appearance in a very short time without any time off from your hectic schedule. Botox can reduce expression and frown lines while fillers can plump fine line, wrinkles and lips.
There are also lasers that can safely and permanently remove unwanted facial or bikini line hair and other lasers that can zap away broken capillaries and dark sun spots. Sclerotherapy is still the best option for unsightly leg vein removal and improvement is usually seen in just one month.
So with just a little planning and help, you can look your best for your wedding day and honeymoon. And when you look your best, everything just seems to go smoother.
Chemical Peels Treat A Variety of Skin Conditions
Today there are a number of medical and cosmetic treatments available to help improve most skin abnormalities. One treatment option that can benefit a variety of patients is the chemical peel. Ranging from mild to strong, most patients can find a peel that will compliment their skin type while improving their skin condition whether it’s to achieve a healthy glow or to correct wrinkles or blemishes.
A chemical peel works as a resurfacing technique that removes the top layers of the skin by means of a chemical, as opposed to heat with a laser or mechanical means with dermabrasion. The chemical is chosen based on the skin type and color of the complexion as well as the skin condition being treated. Acne, aging and discoloration are the usual indications for a chemical peel. New skin is laid down so that pores appear smaller, fine lines are plumped up and seem to disappear and acne and acne discoloration are improved. And no matter what strength of peel is used, recovery time is usually minimal.
The Lupo Center’s three most popular chemical peels are the salicylic acid, glycolic acid and trichloroaceticacid (TCA) peels. There are, however, other peel options that are used in combination with these three peels to give a patient optimal results.
Glycolic acid is the mildest of the peel formulas and is used for the treatment of fine lines, dry skin, uneven pigmentation and acne. As the glycolic acid exfoliates and dead skin cells are removed, healthier, younger-looking skin is formed.
Salicylic acid is a great choice for all skin types and is safe for patients with active acne or rosacea. This peel removes damaged skin caused by aging, acne and the sun to reveal the healthier skin underneath. Combining a salicylic acid peel with a stronger retinoic acid peel is a great way to decrease the visibility of scars, wrinkles and pigmentation.
The TCA peel is the strongest of the three peels, and it is used to correct fine surface wrinkles, blemishes and pigmentation problems. TCA is safe for darker complexions when preformed correctly. A patient can achieve significant results when TCA is combined with a Jessner peel but will have about a week of downtime.
Before any chemical peel is preformed, the doctors at the Lupo Center will set up a pre- and post-peel skin regimen in order to enhance the results. Our doctors often find it beneficial for patients to receive Botox treatments before a peel in order to relax the muscles so the skin heals smoother (see pictures above). To prevent redness, infection and hyperpigmentation after a peel, it is important to keep the skin moist, use daily sunscreen and never pick at the skin. Since sun avoidance after the peel is mandatory, some patients find it easier to receive a chemical peel treatment during the winter months.
A chemical peel is a safe procedure with very few side effects when preformed properly. Dr. Lupo does not recommend over-the-counter chemical peels as the ingredients in the peels can cause significant changes to skin color and even lead to permanent scarring if not used correctly. A trained professional should perform the procedure for safety purposes and overall better results leaving the skin with a healthier, younger-looking glow.

Treating Active Acne & Acne Scars
Acne is one of the most common skin conditions affecting people of all ages – from babies and teenagers to middle age women and men. Acne is an inflammation of the skin’s pores that can appear as pimples, blemishes, whiteheads, blackheads and in severe cases, deep, painful nodules and cysts. The most common areas that are affected are the face, neck, chest and back. Some factors that contribute to acne breakouts include family history, lifestyle factors, menstrual history or use of specific cosmetics and skin care products. It is important to never pick or squeeze blemishes as this can increase discoloration and future scarring. While there are several instigating factors to acne breakouts, today, there are many effective ways to treat active acne and acne scars.
Acne often goes untreated because many people believe that it needs to “run its course” before it can clear up. Not only is this myth, but not treating active acne can cause self-esteem issues and permanent scarring and dark spots on the skin. Because there are different forms of acne and each patient is unique, board certified and nationally acclaimed dermatologist Dr. Mary Lupo uses prescription treatments and/or non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatments to help her patients. Some of the cosmetic treatments available at the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology to help with active acne include chemical peels, SilkPeel®, CoolTouch®, Excel V®, IPL and Isolaz®.
While some patients no longer suffer from active acne, they are reminded of their past condition because of the scars that were left behind. Luckily, there are several options to reduce the appearance of the redness or scars from acne. Dr. Lupo uses the following non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatments for acne scars: Fraxel®, CoolTouch®, CO2 laser/Deep FX, IPL, Isolaz®, SilkPeel®, chemical peels and fillers, including Juvederm®, Restylane® and Radiesse®.
While each patient is unique and treatment types may vary, the Lupo Center is able to help stop or reverse the signs of acne. If you have questions or concerns, please call our office today to schedule a consultation.
